Carbide Tips for Power Tools

Carbide tips are typically attached to tool shanks using a process called brazing. First, the tool shank and carbide tip are cleaned to ensure a strong bond. A brazing alloy, often a silver-based solder, is placed between the carbide tip and the shank. The assembly is then heated using a torch or furnace until the brazing alloy melts and flows, creating a strong bond upon cooling. Proper alignment and even heating are crucial for a secure and durable attachment.

To remove carbide tips, first secure the tool in a vise. Use a propane torch to heat the carbide tip and the brazing material that holds it in place. Apply heat evenly until the brazing material softens, typically indicated by a change in color or slight bubbling. Using pliers, carefully grip and remove the carbide tip while it’s still hot. Allow the tool to cool before cleaning any residual brazing material from the tool shank. Always wear appropriate safety gear, including gloves and eye protection.
